Hello AVID parents,
We have great news 98% of the algerbra I students (9th grade math) passed the Florida End of The Course Exam. This was the best percentage in the county. We hope to have 100% pass the EOC this year.
This year in the AVID classroom the students will be working on Reading-to-Learn strategies, like charting text. The 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be working in collaborative groups to fine tuning their tutorial skills. The tutorials are every Tuesday and Thursday in the AVID Elective class, therefore every AVID student has homework every Monday and Wednesday night. The tutorial homework requires the student to look through their Cornell Notes, quizzes, homework, and tests to discover material (problems) that they do not know and are expected to know for up-coming tests or quizzes. Then, from the information they gleened from their materials they are to write two higher level questions on their TRF form to be ready to present on the next tutorial session. The tutorial comprise 40% of the AVID Elective grade.

AVID students receive another 40% of their grade from their binder score. The binder is to be neat, free of writing on the outside and inside, organized, with Learning Logs in every subject and containing the proper classroom supplies. All Cornell Notes are to be written legibily, with proof reading marks, higher level questions in box #4 and a summary that shows learning by effectively identifing all main ideas.
The final 20% of the AVID grade will come from projects, writing, progress reports, reading assignments, Philosophical Chairs, Socratic Seminars and other assignments.
